Gary Love – A Life Through the Lens
Gary Love's passion for photography began at a young age. By age 10, he was already captivated by the art of capturing the world around him. Determined to pursue his interest, he saved his allowance and, at just 11 years old, purchased a Kodak Gold Edition Disc Camera—his first real tool for exploration. One of his earliest and most profound outdoor experiences was hiking with his father at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. Though he didn't realize it then, that moment left a lasting impression, igniting his deep love for the natural world.
At 18, a transformative journey solidified his calling. He set off from Southern California with a close friend, venturing north to Vancouver, Canada. Along the way, they camped throughout the western United States, uncovering landscapes he never knew existed. The beauty he witnessed forever changed him, and he knew then that landscape photography was his true path.
What began as a way to share his adventures with friends and family evolved into a lifelong pursuit. With over 35 years of experience, Gary transitioned to full-time professional photography in 2003 after selling his landscape company. His background in landscape design gave him a unique perspective on composition and balance. "At a young age, I learned to design outdoor spaces that achieved harmony and flow—those same principles now guide my photography."
Gary's self-taught approach has allowed him to push the boundaries of traditional photography. He believes his lack of formal training has been an asset rather than a limitation. "I studied books, but I learned far more by keeping a detailed log of every shot I took, then reviewing my notes alongside the developed film. In landscape photography, people must see and experience nature in their own way."
His work is deeply immersive—he spends extended periods exploring remote landscapes, equipped with just his camera and camping gear. "I don't just take photographs; I take the time to understand a place before capturing it." In early 2005, he embarked on an ambitious journey across the United States, seeking out rare and breathtaking moments that have since defined his artistic portfolio. After nearly eight years of full-time travel, he settled in Columbus, Ohio, in 2013.
To date, Gary has exhibited in over 37 states across the U.S. and has received numerous awards for his work. His photography has been featured in publications and collected by individuals and corporations worldwide. His pieces are also showcased in fine art galleries across the country.
Through patience, dedication, and an unrelenting passion for his craft, Gary continues to capture the essence of nature, sharing its beauty with the world—one frame at a time.
