The Great Horned Owl, I could not have given this owl a better name. Great horned owls are large and bulky (3-4 pounds), standing 18-25 inches tall with a wingspan of 36-60 inches long. This particular owl has decided to rest in one of nature’s most spectacular wonders, an unnamed slot canyon that is always overlooked by both the locals and tourists. This canyon was more narrow than most and often times I had to climb, jump, and\or crawl on my stomach, dragging my camera bag and tripod in after me. I crinkled a film wrapper to get the owl to look my way, it was very patient with me and allowed me to photograph it for well over an hour; that’s the equivalent of winning the photographic lottery.
